Alberto Pera

Alberto Pera is Honorary Partner and founder of the Competition and Regulation Department at Gianni & Origoni, which he joined in November 2000. He is a recognized expert in national and EU competition law: he is ranked as Senior Stateman for Competition and European Law by the Chambers Europe 2023 directory, is included in the Hall of Fame of Italian competition law and regulatory lawyers by Legal 500 and has been listed in the Who’s Who of Competition Lawyers and Economists since its first edition.
He has represented and still represents some of Italy’s largest companies in major competition and merger proceedings before the Italian Competition Authority, the European Commission, the Administrative Courts and the European Court of Justice.
As of July 2017, he is Chairman of the Associazione Antitrust Italiana (AAI), grouping more than 50 law firms and economic consultancies active in the antitrust and consumer protection sectors.
From 1990 to 2000 he was Secretary General of the Italian Competition Authority.
He was previously an economist for the International Monetary Fund and Chief Economist at IRI (Institute for Industrial Reconstruction).
Alberto holds degrees in both Law and in Economics, as well as a Master in Economics awarded by the London School of Economics. He has been member of the Board of Directors and Chairman in a number of listed companies and banks.
He has authored four books and a large number of articles on competition policy, privatization and regulation. He is also a member of the editorial board of two major publications such as European Competition Journal and Concorrenza e Mercato.
He is a member of the Rome Bar and is entitled to practice before the Italian Supreme Court (Corte di Cassazione).
He speaks Italian, English, French and Spanish.
